The meaning of the word Chichen Itza is the "mouth of the well of the Itzaes," which was the name of the tribe that inhabited the area. In this ceremonial center you will find an amalgam of the Mayan and Tolteca culture, the most important buildings are the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as "the Castle," the Ball Court (Largest of all Mesoamerica), the Sacrificial Well, the Observatory, and the Temple of the Jaguars.

Uxmal means "three times built," and is located only 50 miles from Merida. It is one of the best Mayan samples built in the state of Yucatan, and has impressive constructions such as "the Temple of the Sorcerer," (according to the legend it was built in only one night by a dwarf that governed in Uxmal), "the Quadrangle of the Nuns," "Dove-cat," "the House of the Witch," "the Shrine of the Turtles," and "the House of the Governor." After visiting Uxmal you will continue on to Kabah, also an important Mayan site.

Merida was founded in year 1542 by the Spanish Captain Don Francisco de Montejo. It is actually one of the most important cities in southeast Mexico, The colonial buildings are very well preserved. You will see the house of Don Francisco de Montejo, The Cathedral City Hall, The Theatre Peon Contreras, and more. In this marvelous city you will still find the inhabitants wearing traditional regional dress and will enjoy different folkloric events that take place during the week(mainly on Sunday) in the streets or the main square. Reproductions of these events are available in theaters or in special cultural performances all over the world, but in Merida you will see them just as they take place in own particular way, played by no artist nor professional but by regular people as part of their tradition.
