Pittsburgh may be the town that steel built, but more appropriately it was the city that great industrialists and businessmen, namely Andrew Carnegie and H.J. Heinz, built. Their names, literally, are everywhere. There's the internationally recognized Carnegie Museum of Art, founded in 1895; the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, world-famous for its dinosaur collection; Carnegie Science Center with more than 300 hands-on exhibits; the Carnegie Mellon University; the historic Heinz Memorial Chapel, with one of the foremost examples of French Gothic architecture in the U.S.; the Pittsburgh Symphony's Heinz Hall; and Heinz Field, official home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Another big name in the area is Frank Lloyd Wright. His greatest masterpiece, Fallingwater, designed in 1935 for Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann, is a lovely two-hour drive away. Nearby is another home designed by Wright, Kentuck Knob. Both homes are open for tours.

When you're tired of name-dropping, drop in on downtown's Strip District, a multi-ethnic community filled with fresh produce markets and coffee shops. Come nightfall, the Strip comes alive with nightlife as varied as its shops and markets. In Pittsburgh's South Side, across the Monongahela River, you'll find 15 blocks of historic Victorian architecture and an endless source of entertainment with shops, restaurants, galleries and more. To get a great bird's-eye view of all of Pittsburgh, take the Duquesne Incline, a funicular railway that leads up to the neighborhoods of Duquesne Heights and Mount Washington.
